Summary of Results for Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team

The new Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team
Castrol Honda WTCC Civic

On March 20, 2013, Honda announced that Castrol, the  high-performance lubricant brand, would be the title sponsor of its factory team in the 2013 FIA World Touring Car Championship.

Along with the sponsorship deal, the team adopted a new name - Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team – as well as an exciting green, white and red livery for the Civic WTCC. This brought back fond memories of Honda's previous relationship with Castrol with the Castrol Mugen Accord in 1994 and Castrol NSX JGTC in 2000. Both of the cars are exhibited in the Honda Collection Centre at Twin Ring Motegi.

Here's a summary of the results for the first two rounds of the WTCC season:

Round 1: Monza, Italy
Qualifying was sweet and sour for the team, as Tiago Monteiro was eliminated in Q1, hitting a wall while he was comfortably among the top-twelve.

Nevertheless, the team secured the season’s first podium in the WTCC with Gabriele Tarquini taking a fighting 3rd place in race 2 at a very wet Monza in Italy. Tarquini is 3rd in the WTCC Drivers Championship with 28 points, Monteiro is 6th with 14 points and Honda leads the WTCC Manufacturers Championship with 94 points.

Round 2: Morocco

Gabriele Tarquini won Honda its first pole position in WTCC since 2005, and it was Gabeiele's first pole after thirteen months since Monza 2012.

The team achieved another great result in Marrakech when Gabriele Tarquini again fought and won second place overall in the second round of the WTCC.

Honda now leads the constructors championship with 145 points, going into Round 3

At Slovakia Ring, Honda has achieved 1-2-3 for the Qualifying Sessions! A great result and we wish them a great race, hopefully a first all-Honda podium for 2013!

Honda CR-V 2.4

In the CR-V media drive event, Honda Malaysia confirms that the 4G CR-V 2.4 is on-time for a June launch this year. It is packaged as an upmarket, luxury oriented CR-V and also targeted at those who wants more performance from the CR-V which the current 2.0l version is unable to deliver. Expect full leather interior with hopefully more control over the powerplant to better make use of its greater power, e.g. either a 'Sport' mode or the addition of a sequential shifting option via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. It should be using the same K24 engine that will be put into the new 9G 2.4 Accord when that is launched in the next quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, the current 2.0l variant has delighted Honda Malaysia by far exceeding its sales forecast, almost hitting 3,000 orders within a month of its launch. It also set a new record for highest number of bookings received in a month for any new model launch. This confirms the excellence of this world standard setting SUV and the 2.4l variant should improve it.

9G Accord for next quarter launch

Malaysian Honda fans who are waiting for the new 9Gen Honda Accord, it looks like you have to wait a little bit longer as it will not be launched this quarter. It will be a Honda however, and is highly unlikely to be carrying a different badge.

Honda Unveils Civic Tourer Concept at Geneva Motor Show

Photo 01Honda unveiled the concept of the new Civic Tourer model at the Geneva Motor Show on 5 March, 2013. The concept exemplifies the design themes that Honda has adopted for the current generation of the European Civic.

The Tourer is slated to be introduced in early 2014. The production version could be seen as early as September at Frankfurt. While we are not expecting the Tourer to make it to Asia, we would love the sharp, angular design elements as well as the sloping roof line and front lightings to make it into the Asian models!

New Civic Type R to be tested at Nurburgring

Honda announced that testing at the Nurburgring for the new model will begin in late 2013. While there has been no news of a Japanese version, the new technologies demonstrated in Honda’s World Touring Car Championship Civic certainly shows that Honda has responded to the automobile trends worldwide.

Sales in the Japanese Market for February 2013

Source: world.honda.com

Honda is on track to regain the best seller in the mini-vehicle category.
N BOX was the top selling car in Japan in the mini-vehicle category for the month of February 2013 with sales of 22,354 units. The N BOX was the number two best seller for the year of 2012. For February, the N-ONE was the sixth best-selling car with sales of 10,981 units.

Meanwhile, Honda's automobile sales for February decrease for the second consecutive month year-on-year (since January 2013). This is in line with the decrease in new vehicle registrations for the seventh consecutive month year-on-year (since August 2012).

Fit was the fourth best-selling car with sales of 12,245 units while Freed was the eighth best-selling car with sales of 7,283 units. Step WGN was the ninth best-selling car with sales of 7,155 units.

3G Fit/Jazz Hybrid info

Someone with 'connections' posted this in our TOV forums about the new 3rd generation Fit (Jazz) that is due to be launched this year, probably at the Tokyo Motor Show or just before.

The new Fit hybrid will only come with the 1.5L engine(last Fit Hybrid came with 1.3L or 1.5L) and in Japan it will be cheaper than this gen 1.5L Fit hybrid, starting around 1.6 mil yen

Production will start at the new factory in Yorii this July 2013.

Electric motor will be in the 20kw class and the car can run on EV mode only.

It is likely this new 3G Fit/Jazz will feature Honda's much talked about 'Earth Dreams' powerplant (engine+transmission), maybe even the new i-DCD twin-clutch gearbox that Honda boasted about last year. Honda essentially claimed 30% improvement in fuel economy over the existing IMA system in those press releases so if delivered, the new 3G Fit/Jazz may well likely take the world's hybrid market by storm. The photo above is of the current outgoing (2G) Fit/Jazz.

A holiday in Japan...

Things have been quiet here on 'Honda Fan', and for a good reason. I was away for a trip to Japan and only returned late last week. My last trip to Japan was almost exactly 10 years ago, when I went for a part business, part leisure trip partially paid for by VTEC.NET and partially out of my own pocket. That was to cover the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show but I also took the opportunity to visit a friend in Tokyo.

This trip however is purely for pleasure and I elected to attend an organized tour by Apple Vacations, the premier tour agency for holidays in Japan and Korea. The trip was very well organized and extremely enjoyable, a trademark of Apple Vacation holiday tours. My wife and I were taken on an unforgettable tour which included cities like Fukuoka, Kobe, Yokohama, Nagasaki, Osaka, Kyoto and of course Tokyo. Many of the must-visit places were also located on the outskirts and countryside, e.g. the hot springs of Hakone and also the legendary Fujisan (Mount Fuji, the icon of Japan).

Only two trips to Japan, spaced 10 years apart. It may be surprising to some but I have never had the good fortune of being invited to join any of the formal Honda Malaysia trips for journalists to visit the Honda HQ in Japan or the biannual sponsored trips to the Tokyo Motor Show.

In the context of "Honda Fan", visiting any country gives me a chance to sample the car scene in that country. As a tourist on a bus, I got to see a 'random sample' of cars on the roads, highways and even parked at residences. Thus comparing this trip to my last 10 years ago, I got to see how the car scene has changed.

One good thing I immediately noticed is that there are more, a lot more Honda's in Japan now, compared to 10 years ago. Most of them are the Fit and the Freed, not surprising as these two models are Honda's best sellers in Japan. Back 10 years ago, it seemed as if Japan was literally buried in a sea of Toyota's.

Unfortunately it wasn't only Honda's that have increased their presence on the roads. I also saw lots of Nissan's, Mazda's, even Mitsubishi's and Suzuki's as well. In fact, I can say that the number of Nissan might well have out-numbered the number of Honda's on the roads. Mazda's and Mitsubishi's too were quite conspicious, not to mention quite a lot of European cars especially BMW's. In the overall context, what I really saw was that the market share of Toyota is no longer what it used to be. Back in 2003, perhaps 9 out of 10 cars sighted were Toyota's. Now it is more like 6 out of 10. So Toyota's loss is other manufacturer's gain, in this case, looks like Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and the European makes shared the spoils of victory. But the sadder truth is that Honda did not gain the lion's share. If what I saw was indeed a 'random sample' indicative of the actual composition of car by makes on the roads now, then it seemed to me that the biggest gainer was Nissan though followed closely by Honda and then Mazda, the European makes especially BMW and finally Suzuki.

Hybrids and small sized cars especially the Kei-cars are indeed the most popular now in Japan. Back in 2003, I could clearly see the popularity of large SUVs and MPVs but now they are the minority. The roads in Japan, especially in the rural villages are really more suited to small kei-cars than anything else.

In terms of models, Honda sightings are dominated by the Fit and Freed, though I also saw a few Insights, Life and also the N-One. Isolated sightings of Odyssey's and Stream's and the previous 8G Civic were also made and there also seems to be quite a bit of Honda dealers, both used and old around the many places I visited. Of the sporty models that we are so fond of, I am afraid I did not see any Type-Rs, no Integras or Preludes, very little Civics and no Civic Type-Rs. No NSX. The only sporty Honda's I saw were one isolated S2000 and a few CR-Z's.

However, the lack of sporty Honda sightings is certainly not indicative of the sporty car scene in Japan today. I saw lots of R35 (Skyline GT-Rs), Fairlady's and definitely the Toyota 86 (BR-Z). Indeed I believe I saw more Toyota 86 than all the sporty Honda's combined. So from the perspective of my 'random sample', the sporty car scene in Japan is far from dead. It is quite alive indeed. Every night I could hear cars with loud exhaust tearing down the roads. Perhaps many of them were Honda's but if so, very unfortunately I just did not get to see any of them. From this perspective, Honda very sadly seems to be quite out of the sporty scene in Japan today. Hopefully this might change in the future as cars like the turbocharged 10G Civic, the EV-STER and the NSX-2 gets launched.

The photo's in this post are taken randomly and are quite indicative of the Honda's I saw in Japan. With apologies, I just had to snap that photo of the Toyota 86, parked in a small village near Fukuoka in Kyushu, due to starvation of sporty cars to snap. There was actually one very nice Honda Beat I saw in a carpark near Fujisan which I regretted not being quick enough to take a photo of before it left the car-park. These photos are probably not very exciting to look at but I still hope you enjoy them.

Honda to Build New 2014 Accord Hybrid in U.S.

Honda to Build New 2014 Accord Hybrid in U.S.

On 10 January 2013, Honda announced that the new two-motor Accord Hybrid Sedan, scheduled to go on sale nationwide this fall, will be manufactured at its Marysville, Ohio auto plant.

This will be the third hybrid model built by Honda in America and the first in Ohio. Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC in Greensburg, Ind. was the first Honda plant in North America to build a hybrid vehicle, and currently produces both the Civic Hybrid and Acura ILX Hybrid models.

The new Accord Hybrid Sedan joins the 2014 Accord Plug-in Hybrid Sedan in incorporating Honda's first two-motor hybrid system. Both the Accord Plug-In and Accord Hybrid will be powered by a new Earth Dreams™ Technology 2.0-litre i-VTEC 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine with a powerful 124-kilowatt (KW) traction electric motor that can function as an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) and a 105-KW electric motor.

The 2013 Accords now on sale in the United States are equipped with a new Earth Dreams Technology powertrain, either a direct-injected 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter V6 engine equipped with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). Manufactured at Honda's automobile engine plant in Anna, Ohio, both of these new and efficient engines were named to Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2013.

The 9G Accord was recently launched by Honda Thailand and will be launched by Honda Malaysia with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine. There are no plans to introduce the Accord Hybrid to Southeast Asia as yet. However, it would be in Honda Malaysia's interest as shown by the strong sales of Honda's hybrid models such as the CRZ, Fit Hybrid and Insight due to the strong incentives for green cars in Malaysia.

TOVA will be gaining more insights into future model plans in time to come.
