3G Fit/Jazz Hybrid info

Someone with 'connections' posted this in our TOV forums about the new 3rd generation Fit (Jazz) that is due to be launched this year, probably at the Tokyo Motor Show or just before.

The new Fit hybrid will only come with the 1.5L engine(last Fit Hybrid came with 1.3L or 1.5L) and in Japan it will be cheaper than this gen 1.5L Fit hybrid, starting around 1.6 mil yen

Production will start at the new factory in Yorii this July 2013.

Electric motor will be in the 20kw class and the car can run on EV mode only.

It is likely this new 3G Fit/Jazz will feature Honda's much talked about 'Earth Dreams' powerplant (engine+transmission), maybe even the new i-DCD twin-clutch gearbox that Honda boasted about last year. Honda essentially claimed 30% improvement in fuel economy over the existing IMA system in those press releases so if delivered, the new 3G Fit/Jazz may well likely take the world's hybrid market by storm. The photo above is of the current outgoing (2G) Fit/Jazz.

Honda CR-Z Review is out.

My initial review of the CR-Z is finally finished. There was a slight delay in getting it published on TOVA but it is finally up as at yesterday night. As I did several different tests on this car, I have taken the strategy of publishing several articles so this initial review will be followed by a few other shorter reviews addressing specific areas, like dyno results, or 0-100kph standing start acceleration tests.

More than any other Honda model, the CR-Z has been 'different'. It is Honda's first hybrid 'sports car', and one of the first hybrid 'sports car' in the world. In addition, Honda has taken a quite different approach with the CR-Z, compared to their sports coupes and hot hatches of old, like the Integra, Civic SiR, CR-X, and so forth, and especially their Type-Rs. Consequently, the CR-Z has elicited countless controversies and even outright arguements between long time Honda fans. Opinions of it have been really polarized, with lots of praises and lots of criticisms. After 'owning' the car for a weekend, I have found that, as would be expected and as usual, it all really do depend on one's point of view. This is one of the most important issue I intend, and hope, to address in this review feature.

To make it easy for you, the link to TOVA is at http://asia.vtec.net. Feel free to give your comments or ask your questions here in this post.

CR-Z reviews to start soon

I just returned the CR-Z to Honda Malaysia, during lunch time. I had the car for around 4 days, picking it up early Friday morning. To be honest, I did not have much expectation for the car, due mainly to what I perceive to be its 'below spec' engine. I.e. us Honda freaks are used to sporty Honda cars with 8000rpm redlines and sky-high specific output engines, so a 1.5l i-VTEC with 'only' 125ps didn't exactly stir any excitement when I picked the car up.

Perhaps it is this lack of expectation, though I would think it has more to do with the generally high-quality of execution Honda did on the CR-Z, I am happy to say it has exceeded my expectations a lot ! I really did enjoy driving the car over the extended weekend. Due to its 'status', as the flag bearer for Honda's sporty driving DNA, i.e. the only truly sporty Honda in the current line-up, I did an almost full suite of testings on the car, like what I used to do on TOVA back many years ago. And the CR-Z really did perform well in most of them.

I will start on my reviews for the CR-Z soon. I will be doing a series of them, covering various aspects of the car. For now, as some sort of teaser, I can say that the CR-Z out-deliver in many areas, at least based on my personal expectations. For the standing start acceleration test for e.g., despite a less than ideal environment, I managed to dip below 9.5 seconds for the 0-100kph test, and below 9 seconds for the corresponding 0-60mph test which required one gear change less.

And just now, on the dyno, the CR-Z once again surprised me with its much much higher than expected delivered power at the front wheels. The power I registered on the Dynojet just now was more on par with an engine in the 140+ps power output range, rather than the 'only' 124ps that Honda spec'ed it for.

The series of articles I plan to write on the CR-Z includes an initial preview, then how it performed on the Genting run, coverage of it on the dyno, and the standing start acceleration test. All of these I will compare against other models in the local Honda line-up. Then I will close with a series of three more articles - assessment of the CR-Z from both the Honda enthusiasts and the regular driver points of view and a final assesment. Please check back here at TOVA Honda-Fan for previews of the articles and at TOVA to read the articles themselves.

The Jazz Hybrid is coming !

I can confirm that Honda will be launching the Jazz Hybrid here in Malaysia in the very near future. It will be this month itself though I don't think I should disclose the actual date of the launch at this time. I believe interested buyers will probably already know roughly when as they should be able to place a booking for the car now. This makes a total of three hybrid models in the Malaysian line-up.

Awesome new NSX video by Sony

TOV member TSX69 found this video on youtube and posted the link on our forums. Done by Sony, this is an awesome video of the new NSX concept. Watching it brings me goosebumps all over and if you are as fanatical a Honda fan as I, you will probably feel the same too.

The NSX is Back !!! Photos from the NAIAS

The NSX makes a dramatic return to Honda's, or rather Acura's lineup in the U.S., in the form of the 2nd Gen Acura NSX. Slated to be launched in 2014 and be built in Honda's Ohio plant, this is surely THE most awaited event for all Honda enthusiasts for a long long time.

The new NSX continues the legendary tradition of the original NSX by being an MR and featuring superb power-to-weight ratio as the means to deliver high performance befitting a Honda supercar. It features a new version of Honda's SH-AWD with electric motors powering the front wheels instead of being driven by the engine via a prop-shaft. The engine itself is a direct-injection V6, displacement unknown, and quite certainly DOHC and VTEC. During the special preview in December, Acura told TOV that it will be a higher spec version of the circa 400hp 3.5l V6 that they had been working on thus far. It is unknown if this engine will feature Honda's much awaited A-VTEC system. It is mated to a 'dual-clutch' transmission, i.e. a DSG, number of gears not specified. The engine is a new generation IMA hybrid, with an electric motor reinforcing drive when needed. The new NSX will be developed for production by an R&D team led Honda R&D Americas.

The photos below are selected from TOV's own personal collection, taken at the NAIAS 'Detroit Motor Show'. More photos and the complete press release are available at our Temple Of VTEC main site at http://www.vtec.net.

The NSX is Coming !!! Part Four

The most accurate rendering of the new 2nd Gen NSX so far
Of all the renditions by various automobile publications, internet or published, that we have seen so far, Jeff says the Auto Express magazine of U.K. has come the closest. The illustrations on the left are those we featured on our TOV NNR article and the text below are also from our article. As noted by Jeff, more illustrations are available at the AutoExpress website but the technical details are still unconfirmed at this stage. It is worth remembering that AutoExpress got the engine details for the CR-Z wrong, eventhough it was later confirmed that the engine was changed late in the development cycle for that car. AutoExpress quoted the Insight 1.3l IMA engine for the CR-Z whereas it debuted with a newly developed 1.5l engine.

AutoExpress has two new artistic renderings depicting the NSX concept. They're not exactly perfect representations of the car that was shown to us in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, but these are closer than any of the other sketches that we've seen so far.

AutoExpress has rendered this car as a Honda, and of course the NSX Concept to be shown in Detroit is an Acura, so there are obviously some differences in the grill area. The headlights and taillights in these graphics are shaped pretty accurately, but the lighting elements within the housings are different than what was shown on the actual concept car. The general stance of the vehicle shown in these graphics is pretty close, but the detailing of the back third of the vehicle (particularly the flying buttress c-pillar and the rear air inlets) is probably the least accurate part of these sketches. In less than two weeks you'll be able to see real photos for yourself and we were told that there should be some other details released at that time as well.

You can see the full-size version of these sketches at AutoExpress.com. AutoExpress has a few drivetrain details there but it's not clear whether they are purely speculating or if they've received some confirmed information.

'Avengers NSX'
For comparison, the 'Avengers NSX' driven by 'Tony Stark' is shown on the left. The actual 2nd Gen NSX is virtually this same car with some detail changes, but with a roof.

The NSX is Coming !!! Part Three

In this post leading up to the final exposure of the new NSX concept, I take a look at some of the renditions of this car on the internet and our subjective opinions on how accurate they are. Since the confirmation of this new '2nd Gen NSX', several renditions have since come out. Some are quite a way off the real car but some quite close. The new NSX is really a hardtop version of the 'Avengers' car that 'Tony Stark' drove to one of the Avengers movie sets for shooting. I did talk to Jeff about getting Neil to do our own rendition but now that the car is going public in virtually half a days time, it is no longer prudent to do so. So instead, I first show five renditions done by other publications and what we have to say about them.

Automotive News Website
It's a decent effort - probably better than anything I could have done but apart from some similarities in several elements, it doesn't look much at all like the real car. PLEASE Don't be disappointed by that image.

The vehicle depicted there looks much heavier and blockier than the real thing. Also, it barely looks like an MR car. Just look at the "Avengers" car and imagine it with a fixed roof and a cleaner rear deck design.

Automobile Magazine
Better looking, yes. The front end isn't too far off in that one but the stance of the vehicle looks wrong. They missed most of it past the A-pillar. The cockpit tapers more, more tumblehome, etc

Holiday Auto Magazine (Japan)
Nope, that's definitely not it. The rear is nothing like that at all - the tail on that Holiday auto car looks too long. The NSX concept has a shorter tail - more gallardo/r8-like. from the front 3/4 shot that Holiday auto sketch with the long tail looks more like the american-built SSC.

Best Car (Japan)
Jeff was too busy to comment on this but a later confirmation that the AutoExpress rendition looks the closest indirectly confirms that this rendition is out as well.

Thus far, the Auto Express magazine (from UK) rendition of the new NSX is the closest to the actual concept car that was shown to the media. I shall cover this in the next post.

300 bookings for Honda CR-Z in Malaysia

As expected, the superb pricing and a unique package has made the Honda CR-Z a hit in Malaysia. Honda Malaysia has announced that they have received 300 bookings for the car, despite widespread knowledge that a more powerful version is in the works.

It has also been announced by some that the automatic (CVT) version will be launched in March next year. Meanwhile Honda Malaysia has added three colours for the CR-Z.

The CR-Z should be showing up on the road soon.

Honda Malaysia introduces three more exciting colours to the CR-Z lineup
Petaling Jaya, 8 December 2011 – Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd today announced that the recently launched award-winning All-New CR-Z has received overwhelming response by Malaysian motorists recording robust sales of over 300 bookings within a month of its launch. At its launch in early November, the Hot-Hatch hybrid model was targeted to sell 100 units by end of this year.

Expressing his delight over the positive acceptance of the CR-Z by Malaysians, Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia commented, “Honda Malaysia is very pleased and encouraged by the overwhelming response for the All-New CR-Z. We believe that the world’s first 6-speed manual transmission hybrid vehicle has
broken new grounds in the automotive choices for Malaysians. In our commitment to exceed customers’ expectations, we are pleased to announce that Honda Malaysia will be bringing in three more exciting new colours to add to the CR-Z lineup and to give Honda customers more options.”

Mr. Ueno added that the new colours for the CR-Z, which are STORM SILVER METALIC, MILANO RED, and CRYSTAL BLACK PEARL are scheduled to arrive by early 2012. “With the introduction of the new colours, we are confident that the environmental friendly and fun-to-drive CR-Z will continue to appeal to customers in Malaysia.

He continued, “In Malaysia, there is a growing acceptance towards green technologies and hybrid vehicles, especially with the support from the government in offering full exemption of import duty and excise duty for Hybrid vehicles until December 2013. As the pioneer in introducing hybrid technology in Malaysia, the CR-Z is the third hybrid model that Honda has successfully brought to Malaysians. The All-New CR-Z has been able to fulfil the demand for a stylish hybrid vehicle that is not only eco-friendly but also a performance vehicle that is fun to drive. Malaysians can expect to see the CR-Z on the roads from this month onwards.”

EXCLUSIVE : Higher performance CR-Z in the works !

Ever since the CR-Z was launched, hardcore Honda enthusiasts have been incessantly pointing out how another higher performance variant to complement the current 124ps variant should be Honda's most logical step forward for this model. Everyone agrees that this model is very attractive and has lots of potential and that Honda just needs to fully develop it. More fuel was put into the fire recently when a few magazines from Europe, principally Auto Express U.K. published articles quoting the CR-Z LPL Norio Tomobe-san as saying he indeed had wanted a higher performance version all along and that he is in fact working on one.

And so, at the launch of the CR-Z for Malaysia, where Tomobe-san himself was seated at the media press conference, guess what would be the one question I was dying to ask ? (no prizes here !)

Not knowing how appropriate the question would be, and also thinking that it can also be a rather insensitive one given that it is the current version that is being launched, I held back throughout the whole press conference without asking any questions. When the press conference was over, I hung around waiting for the right moment. Luckily I didn't had to wait long.
My question to Tomobe-san was straight to the point. Indeed I pointed to exactly the Auto Express magazine's claim that he (Tomobe-san) told them (Auto Express) that a higher performance CR-Z is in the works. Is that true or was he misquoted ?

Tomobe-san's response was non-verbal. He gave me a thumbs-up.

!

This was direct confirmation, by the man himself, that a higher performance CR-Z is indeed in the works.

What was more surprising was his response to my next question, "Can I publish this in my site. Can I quote him ?"

"Daijobu" - OK, i.e. "yes, go ahead" !

Naturally I tried to push my luck (I don't think anyone can blame me). I followed up with further questions about rumours of the turbo-charged version, or a 2.0l DOHC version. But my run of luck ended there as Tomobe-san indicated that he is not at a liberty to disclose such details.
Nevertheless, the most important question of all has now been answered and I can confirm because I heard the answer myself.

A higher performance variant of the CR-Z is indeed in the works. The CR-Z model range is (not will be, is being) developed.

Having published this piece of news, I also feel I need to add the following personal opinions. Any higher performance variant of the CR-Z will naturally also be higher in price. Thus if you have already decided to buy the current variant - what has been launched, I feel this piece of news do not invalidate your decision at all. I would think it is quite certain that a high performance CR-Z would sell at the RM150k price point if not higher, if it is still IMA, and closer to RM200k if not IMA. Honda Malaysia CEO Yoichiro Ueno-san actually made this statement, that had it not been for the Malaysian government's exemption of inport and excise duties for hybrid cars, the CR-Z would have to be priced closer to RM200k instead. So the question to ask would be whether you are willing and able to pay the higher asking price that is to be expected of the higher model - how hard-up are you for the extra performance.

Honda CR-Z selling for RM115k !

My internet connection failed right on the day of the CR-Z launch, preventing me from putting up timely updates about the event. With service restored today, I can finally get on with my coverage of the CR-Z for Malaysia.

Honda Malaysia has put the selling price of the CR-Z at an astonishing RM115k, OTR. This is really an incredible price ! To be honest, early last week I SMS'ed some 'friends' with questions about the selling price. Obviously they won't be able to tell me the price outright so I carefully worded my questions, by comparing with existing models. The model I chose was the Civic 2.0l. My 'friends' responded with some hints which suggests to me that the CR-Z will be cheaper than the Civic 2.0l. I stopped at that, not wanting to over-push the 'generousity' of my friends. This is why I posted saying that I believe the CR-Z will sell below RM130k (the price range of the Civic 2.0l). I had honestly expected it to be around RM125k, with a best case of between RM119 to RM121k. But Honda Malaysia outdid themselves and surprised even me, by putting the price at RM115k.

To be honest, the CR-Z has not really been received well universally by all Honda enthusiasts. And my own reaction to it has been lacklustre as well.Much of that has to do with its relatively modest engine power but a little also with the rear suspension layout (torsion beam). However, this low a selling price - RM115k - changes the whole playing field altogether. In one single stroke, the Honda CR-Z is the most affordable 2-door sporty coupe in the Malaysian market. It is the cheapest amongst japanese, korean, and european brands. Even the Kia Forte Koup is slightly more expensive (though by a trivial RM1k). Within this price range too, the CR-Z's modest 124ps rating has also become quite respectable too. The Kia Forte Koup becomes probably the only competitor which is more powerful, thanks to its 2.0l engine. Other comparable cars (2doors, coupe or hatch) in the same price range, well, there really are not that many of them !

The closest alternatives are the hot hatches from Suzuki and local manufacturer Proton: the Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 and the Proton Satria Neo respectively. Both of these uses a 1.6l DOHC engine with variable valve timing. Both are rated at 125ps. There is also the limited edition Proton Satria Neo R3 which has a more powerful 145ps engine though it is less of a direct competitor as it has been 'hardcored', much like a Type-R.

Over the next few weeks, I plan to spend some time dwelling into this question. It should be a question Honda Fan readers will be interested in as well I think.

More thoughts on the Honda CR-Z for Malaysia/ASEAN

Its barely a day to the official launch of the CR-Z here in Malaysia. So, what can Honda enthusiasts expect from this car ?

To start off, the CR-Z have not and will never be called a 'sports-car' or even a 'sports coupe', certainly not by Honda enthusiasts. And I think it make no pretensions to be one either. After some initial wishy-washy-ness, Honda now calls it a 'sporty coupe'. Actually in terms of overall design, the CR-Z feels every inch a sports coupe. Feedback, even from fussy Honda enthusiasts have been universally positive regarding this aspect of the car. It feels and looks great and sporty, both exterior and interior.

The main area where negative comments are directed at is how it drives. Actually more accurately, it is how it accelerates. Here, focus have mostly centered around two main things : the suspension and the engine.

The suspension configuration of the CR-Z is a strut / torsion beam layout for front and rear respectively. Honda performance enthusiasts generally prefers the double-wishbone/ independent-multilink layouts or at least strut/ independent-multilink layouts. So the torsion beam rear has came under some fire. But I think one thing to bear in mind is that the CR-Z is part of the Honda line-up segment which holds models like the Fit/Jazz, City, Insight, etc. These models are slotted below the Civic segment and are designed to use the strut/beam suspension layout. There are inherent disadvantages with the torsion beam  but in the end, this is what models in the CR-Z segment uses and thus this is what the CR-Z have to use. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to bear in mind that the Euro Civic, including the previous generation Euro Civic Type-R uses this suspension layout - strut/beam and it was really very fast and handles quite well indeed, based on personal experience.

Coming to the engine, it is a 16V SOHC-VTEC design and VTEC switches the valve train between 12V and 16V mode, much like the original L15A VTEC used on 1G Jazz 1.5. Power rating of the engine alone is similar, around 110-111 hp. But extra power comes from the IMA motor which delivers around 10-11 hp. So the max power rating for the IMA engine is a combined figure for both the petrol engine plus the IMA motor. Now, Honda however has never really supplied a figure for the CR-Z, at least not for Japan though it is generally held to be around 124ps. Honda U.S. (AHM) specs the max power for the USDM versions at 122hp. So the version to be launched will be spec'ed at around this range : 122 to 124hp (SAE).

While the max power rating for the engine is rather 'ordinary', it is not as much an issue as its lack of power delivery at high-rpms. The IMA motor is basically a high-torque low-rpm motor. It delivers ample torque from anywhere just above 0rpm upwards but falls off drastically once above slightly over 3,000rpm. Redline is around 6200 to 6300rpm which is a bit low when compared to the screaming DOHC and especially the crazy DOHC VTEC engines of the past. So the engine is powerful at low-rpm but will lack the high-rpm capability of past Honda sports engines like the legendary B-series.

But really, all these are just on paper only and surely the more important question is how the CR-Z actually drives on the road, which obviously is where it all counts.

Based on experience from the Insight and Civic Hybrids and I believe the CR-Z will feel similar, the CR-Z should actually be quite preppy at low-speeds. Even the Insight, which has a smaller 1.3l engine but the same IMA motor, will respond quite nicely to prods at the throttle when one is lazying at low-speeds. The car lunges nicely forward when I blip the throttle in gear on the Insight, despite the buffering from the CVT gearbox. As it is expected that the CR-Z will be launched tomorrow with the 6MT gearbox, so the CR-Z will feel powerful (and is relatively 'powerful') at low-speeds. Normal city driving should be a great experience, especially when one wishes to overtake some crawling chicanes on the roads. It would be when we want sustained power delivery right to the rev-cut, e.g. to do an extended overtaking maneuver over several vehicles at one go, that would be when we feel the limitation of the IMA engine. The programming of the ECU in terms of IMA assist, plus the basic low-rpm nature of the IMA motor means we will get a very nice initial surge of acceleration but which will fade rather rapidly as one sustains the WOT into the rev-cut rpm zone. It do not mean the CR-Z is not capable of high-speed driving. Even the Insight managed to hold its head high when I indulged in some high-speed driving on the highway so I think the CR-Z won't be embarassed when called upon to do that. Its just that it won't deliver what the SiRs or Type-Rs are capable of.

But hang on, to be fair, Honda never did say the CR-Z is an equal to those legendary models. In any case, it is also doubtful whether there will be many potential buyers of the CR-Z who are previous owners of those models.

Coming to the CR-Z's handling, comments from actual owners in the U.S. and Japan have actually been quite positive. It seems many CR-Z owners in Japan are even taking it to gymkhana competitions and some are turning in respectable times. In our TOV forums, owners of the CR-Z have also given generally positive feedback on the driving feel and handling of their cars.

So basically I think and hope the CR-Z should find some good reception after its launch here in Malaysia and we shall all find out tomorrow.

Honda Freed and Freed Spike Hybrids

Concurrently, Honda has also announced hybrid versions of the Honda Freed and Freed Spike for Japan. The base Freed and Freed Spike uses a 1.5l SOHC i-VTEC engine and the new hybrid variants will also be using a 1.5l engine, i-VTEC with IMA. Again no other details are available at this moment in time. The relevant url is at

New 1.5l Insight variant for Japan

In their domestic website at www.honda.co.jp, Honda has announced a new variant for the Honda Insight for Japan. This new 'exclusive' or 'premium' variant will be carrying the larger 1.5l i-VTEC IMA engine. There are no official details yet so it is not clear whether the engine will be the one from the Honda Civic Hybrid or the Honda CR-Z. On the relevant page, there is a photo of the tachometer showing a redline at almost 6,000rpm which suggests the former as more likely, though it is not confirmed if the photo is for the new 1.5l variant. There are no indications if the battery will remain the NiMH type or the new LiOn type. Note that the new 9Gen Civic has not been launched in Japan and currently there is no Civic in its line-up. So the HCH and its detail is from the U.S./Canada version.

The url for the announcement of this new variant is :
